We see hundreds of horned grebes on the great lakes in winter and the occasional eared grebe as well. No doubt in my mind it is an eared. Very dusky cheeks and neck, and the bird's "excitable" peak on the top of the head, clinche it for me. Horn's necks and cheeks are much whiter and red eyes. Horn's don't really raise their crowns. At least not with the frequency of eared grebes
