While at Royal Palm Hammock this morning with a group of 6th graders from Cutler Ridge Middle School, I (and the class) saw a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak along the Gumbo Limbo Trail. Though I didn't have much of an opportunity to study the bird (I was busy trying to get the kids on it), it appeared to be a first fall male, though I can't rule out winter male. I went back after the students left, but couldn't relocate the bird. Also seen in the area (between the large Live Oak and Strangler Fig with interpretive signs) were one each of Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Black-throated Green Warbler, Northern Parula, Prairie Warbler and American Redstart, a couple of White-eyed Vireos and several Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. American Bittern, Purple Gallinule and the usual waders were at Anhinga Trail.

While in the park yesterday, I spotted over the road to Royal Palm Hammock, a Swainson's Hawk being harrassed by a white morph Short-tailed Hawk.

Back to the grosbeak: since this is December 1, I suppose this sighting qualifies as a winter report. Mr. NAB/FFN Regional Compiler, are we still in need of a photograph of a Rose-breasted Grosbeak in winter?
