It's that time again!
If you would like to report your Fall 2006 (Aug. 1-Nov. 30) bird sightings from SE Florida (Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach) for possible inclusion in Florida Field Naturalist & North American Birds, now is the time to do so. I will be accepting reports via email through the 15th. The focus of the quarterly report is on rare birds and other interesting sightings (unusual numbers, interesting behavior, etc). If you are unsure whether your sighting qualifies, please send it to me anyway.
Please send your report to me at boydj@fiu.edu.
1. Put your list in taxonomic order (Sibley or NGS order is close enough).
2. At a minimum, we need the following information for each sighting: SPECIES, NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS (assumed 1 if not mentioned), AGE AND SEX OF THE BIRD (if possible), COLOR MORPH (if applicable), LOCATION (including COUNTY), DATE, OBSERVERS.
3. Please include a description, photo, or sketch of the bird(s) for significant rarities. A report with both photo and description is preferred.
4. Note that not all reports submitted will appear in FFN or NAB.
What happens to the reports? I consolidate the reports, then cull the less interesting. What's left is passed on the person handling the report for North American Birds (it rotates), and to Bill Pranty (who does the FFN report). They may cull more sightings for space reasons, or add other sightings sent directly to them.
Why don't I just take them from the birdboard? I do skim over the birdboard, but I don't have time to carefully go through the many postings made in the last few months. Also, birdboard postings may not include all of the required information.
