On Thanksgiving morning we saw four female Hooded Mergansers at the wetlands along the first half mile of the Old Ingraham Highway in Everglades National Park. A couple of White Pelicans also made an appearance, which we hadn't seen there before.

In looking at Christmas Bird Count data for the Coot Bay/Everglades CBC, it appears that waterfowl numbers have declined by 90-95% over the past 50 years. Any ideas on why this might be? I have my own theories, but I'm curious to hear from some of you veteran birders.

Enjoy the weekend!
