I had a meeting in Key Largo today so I started early. I arrived at the L-31 Levee along Card Sound Rd. at 6:17 hoping to find some cool sparrows. I only had one Savannah, a Phoebe, some Yellowthroats, and a bunch of Yellow-rumps, but a Ruby-crowned Kinglet made the stop worth it. In the distance I heard a Clapper Rail.
I then went to Carysfort Circle and saw only another Phoebe and a Gray Kingbird. I thought all these would have left already.
After the meeting, I stopped again at Carysfort Circle on the way home and saw the Wilson's Warbler. Carysfort Circle is located 2.2 miles south of the flashing light where Card Sound Road T's in North Key Largo. The Wilson's was located along the south road, about 30 feet before reaching the first house (it has a palm in a teracotta vase in front). The Wilson's was alond the north side of the road in the larger shrubs at the edge of the open area. Only other birds this time were a Prairie, and a Yellow-rumped that was feeding in the edge of the road and refused to move as I walked past.
There have been a few Ruby-crowned this season, so maybe this is the year for Kinglets. Bring on the Golden-crowns!!
