When looking at a perched hawk that may be one of the above: Look at the secondaries. Red-shouldereds have barring and Broad-wingeds do not. The young hawks of both species can be easily confused with one another and this is a definitive separation tip. The barring may be faint on Red-shouldereds but it is present.
Your field guide should have a drawing of a bird showing where the secondaries are. Good luck!
