Ten birders joined me this morning for the beginning birdwalk in Everglades National Park. All the usual suspects were present (birds, that is), plus we had a few surprises. There were no less than five American Bitterns at Anhinga Trail, providing great close-up views of all the things that bitterns typically do. Two of them had a tiff over feeding territory that resulted in one bittern erecting every feather on his upper half, making him look for all the world like a Ruff in mating season.

There were Spoonbills at both Paurotis Pond and at Eco Pond in Flamingo. Also at Eco were lots of White Pelicans feeding. These were viewed from the road, since you still can't go in there (though I don't quite see what is so "extremely dangerous," as the sign indicates). All of the wood from the former viewing platform has been removed.

There was a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher just west of the pull-off at Eco, by the campground.

There were four crocodiles around the marina, swimming, loafing, etc. One big one was swimming in the boat harbor itself.
