Ruddy Ducks? at Green Cay, Boynton

Sorry I don't have a photo - but I need a little help. These were very small (PB grebe sized) chunky ducks, with dark bills, dark caps (reddish on one, blackish on the others), muddy light brownish coloring with white/tan spots on face and behind eyes, with a browish stripe running under the cap to the back of the head. They are divers. Looking at my books, the only thing that has similar markings and size are ruddies - but there was no blue coloring I could see on the bills. Any other guesses from you guys?
