On home duty yesterday, I was birding in my yard when a Clay-colored Sparrow popped up out of the weeds near the canal and perched obligingly in the bouganvilla, giving definitive looks at close range. This is the second Clay-colored Sparrow I've had in my yard; the first was in 2004, on October 20!

Another highlight was watching a Cooper's Hawk chase down and catch a Collared-Dove. This is second day in a row I've seen a Cooper's Hawk with a CoDo in its talons (Friday there was one near Killian High, on 106th St.)

Also in the yard were Painted Bunting, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, House Wren, BT Blue and Palm Warblers, Common Yellowthroat, and Eastern Phoebe. A Pied-billed Grebe was in the canal. A day total of 27 wasn't bad for a drizzly day
