The House Sparrow is one of the family Passeridae, the Old World sparrows (sometimes called true sparrows), as is the Eurasian Tree Sparrow.
Our other sparrows are in the family Emberizidae, the New World Sparrows (and Old World Buntings).
Some authorities think both types of sparrows should be considered subfamilies of the finches.
