I saw the most glorious thing this evening as I left work at Biscayne National Park (Convoy Point). A long line of white birds, then another, then another, around 300 birds in total (but more may have passed by before I noticed them). The lines of birds appeared to be ribbons just inches above the water, flying from east to west near the nuclear power plant at Turkey Point. The ribbons undulated when birds flew a few inches higher when they reached a particular point and then back down, each bird imitating the bird ahead of it. The overall effect was so lovely. I had never seen anything like it, they stretched so far and flew so close to the surface of the water. They may have been flying to roost sites for the night. In any case I feel pretty lucky to have seen this beautiful sight. I am not sure what species - they were pretty far but I would guess something around the size of a small white wader (snowy egrets?). I know I should have run to get binoculars, but I couldn't tear myself away. It lasted about five minutes. I hope I see it again one day.
