I am guessing this is pretty normal. Preditors will often take a liking to a specific prey. Herons are known for eating any animal they think will fit down their throats. Choking to death is supposed to be relatively common. I mentioned this to Kip Miller, the cheif naturalist at Love Creek Nature Center (Michigan)
He leads birding trips all around the world. He said he saw cattle egrets eating warblers that were trying to get fresh water at a dripping fountain on Dry Torugas. The bird I saw was very bold. I was less than ten feet away with no barriers in-between.
