Most birds are fairly opportunistic feeders, and you may have noticed that right now there are Palm Warblers EVERYWHERE. I think it's safe to assume that this bird was just taking advantage of an abundance of prey rather than being forced to abandon its normal foraging strategies. I've seen a Great Egret eat a large alligator lizard, so it doesn't surprise me too much to hear about this. I do think, however, that Great Blue Herons are more apt to feed on large terrestrial vertebrates than Great Egrets are.
As for how they kill them, I think that a broken neck is more likely (and a lot easier) than suffocation.
