Hi Patty,
Some additional comments: Brown Creepers have a very clean white breast and upper belly. Also they have a stiff tail that they use for leverage to help them climb (exactly like woodpeckers) On personally experience I only thought they climb upwards and not downwards head first. Have you considered a House Wren? It's smaller & more streaked on the back than a Carolina and matches the discription you wrote.
