Sandhill Cranes (originally 4?) have been kept at Crandon Gardens as rehab birds for several years. They have successfully bred and those able to fly, move around Key Biscayne, including Crandon Park (north end) and the sand flats at low tide.
I don't know the "legal" status of these birds. They are maintained by a volunteer who also purchased and feeds various ducks, geese and swans at the gardens. Therefore, all unusual waterfowl sightings are suspect on Key Biscayne.
