Binoculars-recommendations appreciated

Hi fellow Birders-Since we are enjoying the great fall migration, I am beginning to realize that I need a compact pair of binoculars. I would appreciate any recommendations you can give ( and I do understand optics, so feel free to go into detail), I am willing to spend up to $500 ( why not?), but I would really like to know what all of you are using out there( please be specific - brand, model.
