After viewing several photos and illustrations of both races of Short-eared Owl, I believe the bird I saw to be of the northern (holarctic) race. I came to this conclusion because of the amount of buffiness in the breast area of the carribean race which, I forgot to mention, was not present in the bird I saw. The bird I saw did not seem to have heavy streaking in the breast area either, giving it a pale appearance when viewing it by the front. That's all I can say. If indeed this was the nominate race, then there's always the possibility it may stick around for the winter. I'll keep my eyes open.
Cheers,
RJ
