Yesterday, after the STA-5 tour in Hendry County (look for a separate report), Margaret England from LaBelle, Roberta & Bill Marten and Alan Murray from Naples, and Ken Allen & his mother from the Tampa area and I witnessed a truly remarkable spectacle out in Palm Beach County along the Bolles Canal on C.R. 827 south of South Bay (DeLorme page 107, D3). For more than 30 minutes and probably longer than that, hundreds and hundreds of Bobolinks passed over our heads and the surrounding sugarcane fields forming four huge "flocks" on their southerly migration. Conservatively, we would estimate that between 7,500 and 10,000 Bobolinks were present while we stood on the road taking in the spectacle. It was awesome to hear these birds vocalizing with their slightly whistled "ink" call. In all of my years of birding, I have never seen this many Bobolinks in one place at one time and I would wager that few others have either. It was just a case of being in the right place at the right time. . . .
