Birders, not warblers. Gotcha! I couldn't resist. We had 17 birders on today's walk at Matheson, and although the birds were on the slow side, we had a great time with enough variety to keep things interesting. The morning started off with a bang with a Protho-notary Warbler in a Sea Grape in front of the parking area just as we were assembling for the walk. Other warbler species included Magnolia, Parula, Prairie, Palm, Black-and-white, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-throated, Worm-eating, Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush, Common Yellowthroat, and American Redstart.
The raptor migration is kicking-in, and we saw the FOS kettle of Broad-winged Hawks. We also had great looks at a dark phase Short-tailed Hawk, and an American Kestrel. A calling Red-shouldered Hawk rounded out our raptor list.
Other birds seen included Eastern Wood-Peewee, Great-crested Flycatcher, Summer Tanager, Red-eyed, Yellow-throated, and White-eyed Vireos, Veery, Blue Grosbeak, Indigo and Painted Buntings, and several Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. As always, Matheson produced some local specialties with good looks at Hill Mynas and several overflights of Yellow-chevroned Parakeets.
Many thanks to all those you joined us today. Hope everyone is gearing-up for Octoberfest!
