The Northern Wheatear, which made a very wrong turn somewhere on it's journey possibly into Europe and beyond, was easily found Saturday evening (just after 7:00 pm). David Simpson was there and offered his scope for some "crippling looks" as a Brit might say. My ride and I stayed until about 12:30 do see what snakes were out (many were moving tonight, including fourteen cottonmouths). A King Rail, then an American Bittern, were seen just before the the intersection to the Pa-hay-okee Overlook.
At least three Barred Owls were seen, as well as Common Nighthawks and Chuck-will's-Widows. Perhaps the bittern may be the only individual in the Dade NAMC.
Anyway, the wheatear is a really cool bird, and maybe the rarest Florida bird I have seen.
