Today I ventured out with Larry Manfredi, Brennan Mulroney, and Warren Whaley from Michigan in search of fall pelagics, with the duty of taking notes on all the birds seen. We were disappointed that despite two stops at different times of the day, Fowey Lighthouse had no Brown Boobies. This is the first time in the last nine trips where we stopped at the lighthouse that the boobies were not there. The highlights, though, were a beautiful adult, light-morph Parasitic Jaeger that gave us good looks on the water then flew towards us and gave even better looks and photo ops. We also saw another distant Jaeger that was most probably a Pomarine. It was chasing a Magnificent Frigatebird. Also in the highlights was a flock of 14 Red-necked Phalaropes sitting on the water. Below is our pelagic tally for the day. I'm submitting the full day's list for the NAMC count, but the form doesn't include Shearwaters or Phalaropes. Help?
The pelagic list:
Magnificent Frigatebird (58)
Cory's Shearwater (6)
Parasitic Jaeger (1)
Pomarine Jaeger (1) probable
Bridled Tern (10)
Sooty Tern (37)
Red-necked Phalarope (14)
Other notables:
Common Tern (1)
Black Tern (13)
Caspian Tern (4)
Merlin (1) out over deep water
A very nice day out on the water. I can't wait to see the photos of the Jaeger and Phalaropes.
