Middle Cape Sable

Yesterday I was at Middle Cape Sable with several park staff and saw an incredible number (thousands, I'm guessing) of birds--mainly shorebirds--on the beach...by far more than I've ever seen out there. There were also several species of terns, including Black Terns. Unfortunately, most of the folks weren't birders, so I didn't have a lot of time to really check things out.

I later learned that we were there during an extremely high tide: 4.8 feet above mean sea level. I figure the large number of birds was due to a combination of migration and their being driven to the beaches until the tide lowered.

In case you're not aware, Cape Sable is only accessible by boat. It's about 15 miles west of Flamingo.
