While "herping" (reptile watching or catching) on Monday night with a biologist along roads near Chekika, we couldn't help but see some cool birds out there.

On the way in from Krome Avenue, we saw a large bird flying east from the Glades. Something was not right; it wasn't a heron, a stork, or a crane. The flight and shape was all wrong. Long, broad wings, white head, thick bill. Metro Zoo wasn't too far away. Some research after getting home, and I concluded at this: Wooly-necked Stork. A really cool bird!

Hundreds of Common Nighthawks were out and about, and seemed to settle down on the roads after dark. They will sit right at the edge of the road and fly up only when you are right in front of them. Instead of flying away from the car, they would fly towards the car, probably to grab a moth in front of the headlights.

Both night-herons and a Barn Owl were also seen.

Hundreds of frogs were seen, and thousands more were heard. Over thirty snakes were out on the road. I was able to grab twenty-four, of seven species, including a python that was collected to give to a biologist working with the pythons in Florida.
All the other snakes were photographed and released.
