Mid-August Birding

Last Monday, while heading to soccer practice at school, I watched as an adult Bald Eagle flew over Biscayne Boulevard and about NE 70 street. This is the third straight August that I have seen Bald Eagles in this area in Miami. The last two were at Morningside in 2004 and 2005. Interestingly, both times I saw the eagles in Morningside, I was playing basketball and the bird did the same thing, fly almost right over the courts in the afternoon. It has to be the same adult bird.

And while running during cross country practice today in Morningside, I looked up to see three Swallow-tailed Kites flying over the shoreline of the bay. One was actually soaring over the water with a frigatebird. I heard a couple warblers out there, mostly Prairies and a Northern Parula. Barn Swallows are seen daily.

On my way to school every morning, it's safe to assume I'll see the same adult Black-crowned Night-heron flying over North Miami Avenue and NE 84th street.
