Driving to work today, my wife and I saw a frigatebird sitting by the side of the road. I bundled him up in a towel and took him over to the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station on the 79th St Causeway. He was dehydrated, but the patient is doing better after some fluids.
Among their usual pelicans and gulls, they were rehabbing a gorgeous adult brown booby. The curator told me that they just released a tropicbird a couple of weeks ago, and that they had 96 species last year, including some shearwaters and petrels. This relatively unknown facility would be a good place to monitor to possibly get some up-close looks at some of the seabirds that are such a challenge to identify.
