Does anyone know how long it takes from hatching to leaving the nest????...I have been waiting for almost 2 months to see the babies and today there is no activity at all....for the last 2 weeks, there has been lots of noise, and the last few days feeding has been almost non-stop....We had a really bad rainstorm last night and I'm almost afraid to think that they may have drown inside the tree....I did see the mom & pop outside the nest once today, but never saw them try to enter.....The male's head & shoulder area seemed wet & matted......Do they just fly away one day??? Do the young ones stay locally in the yard for a while???....This is the 1st pair of red-bellied woodpeckers to mate in my dead tree, in a NWF certified yard........I can't get a ladder to the limb to chech the nest for fear of the branch breaking off 20' in the air......Any thoughts?...Thanks,..Jerry
