I visited Marco Island yesterday afternoon. Burrowing Owls were conspicuous at marked burrows in residential areas on the island, with six seen at a burrow on Kendall Drive near Hernando Drive (the road leading to Tigertail Beach). Nothing unusual at Tigertail. Seen were Brown Pelican, Double-crested Cormorant, Magnificent Frigatebird, Great, Snowy, Cattle and Reddish Egret, Great Blue, Tricolored and Little Blue Heron, White Ibis, Turkey Vulture, Osprey, Red-shouldered Hawk, Black-bellied, Snowy, Wilson's, Semipalmated and Piping Plover, American Oystercatcher, Greater Yellowlegs, Willet, Marbled Godwit, Ruddy Turnstone, Red Knot, Sanderling, Short-billed Dowitcher, Spotted, Semipalmated, Western and Least Sandpiper, Laughing Gull, Royal, Sandwich and Least Tern, Black Skimmer, Common Ground-Dove and Belted Kingfisher.
Along the puddle-covered service road on the west side of Matheson Hammock Park, I saw the following this morning: Black-whiskered Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Hill Myna, Northern Parula, Yellow-throated, Prairie and Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstart and Louisiana Waterthrush (attracted to the aformentioned puddles).
Vacation's over, back to work tomorrow.
