Wood Thrushes are a very uncommon migrant in south Florida during the fall (mostly October) and probably almost absent during the spring. One fallout in mid-October 2004 (when a large storm in north Dade caused thousands of migrants to descend into Miami Shores), I spotted two Wood Thrushes in Miami Shores, among probably 60 Swainson's Thrushes and 5 Gray-cheeked Thrushes. Only under special circumstances do we get to see them in Miami-Dade. Where in Miami Shores does your friend live? I pointed out a Wood Thrush to a woman down the street who has an interest in birds.

As for the waterthush i.d., both species are possible at this time, with Louisiana probably in better numbers here at this time. At a couple points in fall migration, Northern Waterthrush can be pretty common.
