Hey all,
I've been out of town birding the parts in Florida that actually have breeding birds! Well, actually we were looking at colleges but there was plenty of time to play. I'm tired but eager to get this done today, so I'll make it snappy.
We spent three nights in Tampa, two nights at Wakulla Springs State Park, one night in Tallahassee, and three nights in Orlando.
Nothing too exciting was going on in Tampa, but in St. Petersburg I saw a beautiful Black Tern as well as Black Skimmers and Black-hooded Parakeets.
We took a trip to Hernando Beach to find the famous but declining Budgerigars. We saw four after little effort. That was Florida bird 297!
In Gainesville on the way up to Wakulla Springs, I saw the first of many Mississippi Kites. Florida bird 298! Many Swallow-tailed Kites were also seen on the way to the Panhandle.
We arrived at Wakulla Springs in the afternoon and I was too busy jumping off the large platform to bird. A walk around the lodge at night produced a Barred Owl sitting on top of a garbage can.
The next two mornings I was able to find quite a few birds just around the lodge: Wood Duck, Mississippi Kite, Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Red-headed Woodpeckers (quite a few), Eastern Wood-Pewees, White-eyed and Yellow-throated Vireos, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chickadee, Northern Parula, Summer Tanager, and Orchard Orioles.
I would go ahead and tell you all about St. Marks and my next two Florida birds, but it's time for a nap.
