This scale was pointed out to the Grounds Committee at MHOC (Parkland fla)two weeks past. It is spreading rapidly and presently is infesting only wax myrtle. We are also experiencing a yet unidentified tent caterpillar that is specific to Fiddlewood Green body bright orange/red head about 1/2" long. It takes out a whole tree (15 feet tall) in about three days. We can offer no seeds for birds feeding on fiddlewood berriesmthis year.
Brown thrashers present in large numbers throughout the 24 acre site...but no sound...no singing...no chirping. Silent this year. Consequently difficult to spot unless you sit and watch an area for 10-15 minutes and they break cover.
Downy woodpeckers now present (2) and many starlings arriving in flocks of 10-25. One red tailed hawk spent two days on site and now is gone. Judging from the feathers on the ground he took a dove or two with him.
