Snail Kites are still coming into roost in C-8 cypress stand. I saw 14 last night. There were already 6 in the trees and surrounding willows at 6:45pm. By 7:45 there was lots of jockeying for prime spots and lots of squawking. Also in the same roost were 3 juvenile Black-crowned Night Herons with one adult and several anhingas. We also saw three limkin in the area, swallows (barn and tree are my best guess) and common night hawks.
C-6 is still pumped down but most of the bird activity seems to be in the morning between 6 and 8 am. Of note have been 10-50 Snowy Egrets, which have been uncommon here lately. Lots of Little Blue Herons, Tricolored Herons, and fewer Green Heron, Great Egret and one or 2 Limpkin usually hang out in the area.
Saturday in the trees around the visitors parking lot there were black and white warblers, and a yellow-throated warbler.
If you come out to the refuge avoid Atlantic Ave. It will be closed at the turnpike underpass August 16 at 7PM until August 19th.
At this writing the refuge is open 6am to 8:30PM.
Just a side note this morning at my summer feeder in west Delray I had two brown thrashers.
Enjoy,
Kathy
