Yesterday evening the Purple Martin roost in front of the Racetrack gas station on the west side of Davie Road (SW 64th Ave.) about a quarter mile south of I-595 was still going strong. The martins were gathering overhead in the thousands by 8:00 PM and were nearly all at the roost a little after 8:30.

At TY Park in Hollywood four Pied-billed Grebe chicks have left the nest and are being tended by their parents on the east side of the lake. This is the second brood of chicks which are really pretty with bright orange bills and a juvenile head pattern suffused with orange. Today both parents were busy catching Crawfish in the shallow parts of the lake for the hungry youngsters. Killdeers have also fledged a second brood; the four young spend most of their time around the northeast corner of the large white building on the east side of the park. There is also a flock of Blue-crowned Parakeets that make their headquarters near the southwest corner of the park and good numbers of Statira Sulpur butterflies in the northwest corner. The entrance to TY Park is on North Park Road north of Sheridan Street less than half a mile west of I-95.
