Purple Swamphen Article

In the latest installment of "Birds In The News" (on a birding blog site) , there is mention of the fear that the exotic Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) in Palm Beach County, FL may be acting as it does in much of its native range i.e eating bird eggs and ducklings to the detriment of native nesters. I personally have not witnessed this situation but I can say without a doubt that these birds are exponentially increasing their numbers in such places as STA-1 in Palm Beach County and especially STA-5 in Hendry County. Just this past weekend, there was an estimated 100+ Purple Swamphens at STA-5. This can't be a good thing for native nesters that share habitat with these exotics. To read the article, go here:
