I decided to look for the Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow this morning. I arrived
at the site 1.1 miles south of Mahogany Hammock just before sunrise. Shortly
after arriving I heard the sparrows, but they were not near the road. After a
short time I got one brief look at one Seaside Sparrow through my binoculars, it
was 150 feet from the road and that was it. I walked a half mile south and a
half mile north of the location hoping to see another sparrow with no luck so I
headed to Flamingo to look for Shiny Cowbirds.
There were 3 shiny and 5-6 brown-headed cowbirds along with a dozen or so
starlings. Flamingo is still quite obviously damaged from the hurricanes last
year, but things are greening up. I checked the flats since it was low tide and
didn't see much, just a few waders.
It was nice to bird the park, but I sure wanted a photo of a Seaside Sparrow.
Next time I guess...
On the way out of the park I missed a photo opportunity of a Swallow-tailed
Kite perched on the side of the road by a few seconds.
Wasn't my lucky day.
