The Purple Martin roost in front of the Race Trac gas station on the west side of Davie Road (SW 64th Ave.) about a quarter mile south of I-595 is still going strong. The martins are congregating over the area by about eight PM and converge in large numbers over the roost in a counterclockwise rotation by about a quarter after eight and begin to alight on the power lines and roosting trees. By eight thirty most of the birds are at the roost or jockeying for perches around the trees and power lines and making quite a racket.

The departure from the roost is usually more prolonged, beginning at first twilight and lasting until between six and six thirty. This is the third year that I ve been watching this roost which is used by thousands of martins. The first indication that martins were massing in the area this year was on May 11 when I first began hearing them calling in the early twilight over the Davie area.
