Sandhill Cranes have been regularly observed in the fields around Lucky Hammock for a few years. I have seen them several times inside ENP in the area where you observed one (i.e. just south of Mahogany Hammock) as well as along the road to Royal Palm.

On the NAMC this spring, I saw a pair cicling high overhead on Loop Road just north of the Dade/Monroe county line.
