Folks,
the photographed hawk, which is the same one Dee posted about yesterday, is a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk, possibly of the eastern race (as opposed to the paler Florida race). This is the same kind of hawk that I helped identify several postings back (yet someone else disagreed). This is our most common Buteo for the summer. Broad-winged Hawks summer in the panhandle, while Short-tailed Hawks in central/north Florida. Red-tailed Hawks are not as common in extreme south Florida (I'm not saying you can't find them, just not as common). I take it this bird was photographed at ENP? I'd like to suggest, for those of you interested in raptors, two inexpensive books:
Hawks From Every Angle: How to Identify Raptors in Flight. Jerry Liguori (2005).
A Photographic Guide to North American Raptors. Brian K. Wheeler (2003).
You can get both for under $30.00 at Amazon. Both are excellent guides for beginning and advanced birders, as well as photographers who would enjoy being able to identify them.
Now all I need is for someone to tell me this is a Broad-winged Hawk...go ahead, I dare you.
Cheers,
RJ
