While eating lunch today at the Pollo Tropical in Coral Springs, I saw three birds feeding in the sand amongst the shrubs on the east side of the store. At first glance, I thought they were mockingbirds, but I noticed the rusty red backs and wings. The breast was a creamy color with dark spots. They were somewhat hidden in the bushes.
It appeared there was a parent teaching two youngsters to forage and feed, since the two smaller birds were being fed by the other. The "parent" was digging for berries in the sand under the shrubs, and appeared to be "teaching" foraging skills.
Since I am quite new at id, I think these were Veeries or a Thrush of some kind. I have never seen this bird before and since the behavior seemed like younger birds being helped by an older bird, it stumps me. My sources say these birds are way away from breedig areas.
Sometimes I kick myself in the rear for not bringing my glasses with me to work!
Any ideas on what these were?
