This evening, while walking in the neighborhood with my daughter, I spied a Pileated Woodpecker perched upon the luggage rack of a Mazda MPV. The bird was repeatedly peering upside down over the side of the car and then bobbing back up.

This is the first time I have ever seen a Pileated Woodpecker in Margate, and the third occurence in my life. It is the first for my 9 year old daughter.

We watched the bird for perhaps a minute, then the woodpecker flew down beside the minivan. We walked carefully around to view the other side of the vehicle. There it was clinging to the rubber gasket surrounding the car's window. It seemed to be watching the reflection in the window. We stayed, and watched the bird for about 15 minutes, all the while, having the opportunity to show it to our neighbors.

All the neighbors had never seen a Pileated Woodpecker before. It was fun to introduce them to this impressive woodpecker. Growing up in south Florida, I always wondered... why did did they draw Woody Woodpecker that way? All the woodpeckers I have seen didn't look like that!

We then left the bird still clinging to the window and enthralled by its reflection!

I am glad I walked tonight!
