The reason for not incubating until all eggs are laid, as Fred described, is so that the eggs will hatch at the same time and the chicks upon hatching will be all about the same size.

Laying eggs takes a lot of energy for the female...ducks generally have fairly large clutches. The female could not physically lay all of the eggs at once.

What a great opportunity to teach your daughter!
