Hi all,

Fifteen of us saw the male _zena_ (black-backed) Western Spindalis at Everglades NP this morning from 7:20am 7:35am. It visited the fruiting fig at the parking lot for the Anhinga and Gumbo Limbo trails. The fig is located on the east side of the buildings (the ones with the soda machines) on the east side of the parking lot. The spindalis fed in this tree for a couple minutes and then flew to the southwest side of the parking lot, where it perched in a gumbo limbo without fruit for several minutes. The bird called somewhat frequently while perched in the tops of trees. It never sang.

Our experience suggests that morning may be the best time to look for this bird, and waiting near this fruiting tree work well.

Many thanks to those who originally found and posted information about this bird, and those who have provided updates.

Cheers,
Chris
