I went back to Royal Palm this morning looking for the Western Spindalis and
struck out again. Larry Manfredi was there also looking for the bird. He thought
he may have heard the bird in the hammock on Gumbo Limbo Trail, but he didn't
see the bird either.
The flock of warblers that I saw yesterday were gone. There was about 1/2 the
number of warblers and 2/3 the number of species. I didn't stay as long today as
yesterday, but I did drive up Research Rd. and saw a couple of Swallow-tailed
Kites and Meadow Larks. I also spoke with someone tracking the 10 Turkeys that
were released in January. He told me that of the 10, 6 are still alive and in
the area.
On my way back out of the park on Research Rd. I saw a flycatcher and stopped
for a look. I believe it was the same Brown Crested Flycatcher that I saw
yesterday on Gumbo Limbo Trail. I was able to get one photo of the bird in
flight that shows the mostly white or at best very pale yellow belly.
I stopped in the annex and saw Larry there again. He said there was a lot of
fruit on the trees and there were quite a few warblers in them. Larry tried
talking me into going on the Tortugas trip this Thursday. I sure wish that I
could go. There is a front coming down this weekend which could make birding
good. Larry has two spots open for the trip this Thursday and I encourage anyone
with the time and desire to contact him about the trip.
On the way back to Homestead I saw 2 White Crowned Pigeons, 4 Grey Kingbirds
and 5 Common Nighthawks on the power lines.
Green Heron
Anhinga and chick
Red Bellied Woodpecker
Another Anhinga and chick
Anhinga trying to cool itself
Catbird with white in tail and on wing. Also very light around eyes. Larry
spotted this one.....
Female Cape May
Dagger Wasp digging a nest.
White-tailed Kite
Brown Crested Flycatcher
Common Nighthawk
I'm done birding for the week, but I may slip out Saturday morning for a
little while. : )
