I woke up a little too late this morning to do some neighborhood birding. I still have another week of spring break (we started Thursday), so I walked out this morning at about 8:50 to see if there was any activity outside. A couple warblers flew by, and I ran into the house, grabbed my binoculars, and ran outside the house. Warblers were around, but not as active as they would have been an hour before. I noticed most of the warblers I heard were far above me heading north. Conditions were right, so why not keep on going?
Here is what I had in about twenty minutes around the block:
Great Egret- about ten heading north
Peregrine Falcon
Gray Catbird
Prairie Warbler
Palm Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler
American Redstart- a few
Common Yellowthroat
And then there were a few that got away... Firt, a kingbird flew by but disappeared behind a couple trees (looked like an Eastern). Next, a large, brown bird flew out from the underbrush that I saw from the corner of my eye could have easily been a Chuck-will's-widow. Lastly, a drab warbler I saw for a split second looked very much like a young Yellow Warbler.
However, one thing is for sure from what I have gathered from yesterday and today: migration is on!
