OK, here we go... Something to do while waiting for migrants to drop out of the
sky.
Below are photos taken today of a flock of "Peeps" flying over Cutler Wetland.
They were in the North East quadrant of the property. I parked on 97th Ave. and
jumped the guard rail and walked out as far as I could without needing boot. I
searched for about 1/2 hour before a couple of flocks of birds began flying
around due to a Merlin flying low over the area. I quickly eliminated a flock of
turnstones and a flock of Yellow-legs. Then I took a couple of shots of another
flock of peeps and then noted where they landed.
I was able to observer some streaking on the breast and on the flanks of one of
the birds. It was the right size, color and shape for a White Rump Sandpiper,
also the bill drooped slightly at the end. I also thought I saw a little bit of
a rust color just behind the eye, but the light was not the best and they were
at least 200ft away.
So...
What do you think? White Rump Sandpipers at Cutler Wetland? I'm 95% sure...
Unless someone has another good candidate with these identifiers, then I'm gonna
count White Rumps on my list for the year. Thanks to "The Man", "Life is good",
Paul Bithorn, I saw a couple last year near the Homestead Speedway.
???
??? Didn't have time to find this one in my guide...
