Although a good number of birds go "hop, hop, hop", I believe the one you are refering to is the House Sparrow, Passer domesticus, not a true sparrow, but a weaver. This species was introduced in North America from Europe circa 1850, and is now found all over, and I mean ALL over: North, Central, and South America for starters.
