Nothing too unusual about the birdlife in Everglades Nat. Park last Saturday, but it was such a beautiful day that everything seemed a little special: baby Green Herons huddling in the morning chill on the Anhinga Trail, a singing Carolina Wren at the entrance to Gumbo Lingo Trail, all the Spoonbills at Parotis Pond, a Swallow-tailed Kite cleaving the air at Flamingo, and an Osprey enjoying every part of a mullet at the same place (he saved the tail for last).

At Nine Mile Pond, I was surprised to see a large crocodile basking near the bank, amid all the gators. When I got near for a picture, he raised up on all four legs (adrenaline rush!), but merely slid back into the pond. I have never seen a croc there, and didn't expect to because Nine Mile is basically fresh water. There were three more crocodiles across from the marina store at Flamingo (which is open now, by the way). No sign of "Gumby" the big old toothless croc that used to be regular there.
