A surprise find at 7am Saturday on the shoreline of the Flamingo walk-in campground (west of the amphitheater) was a non-breeding plumaged Common Loon. Initially heard as distant wailing and yodeling, the last thing I expected was a Common Loon hauled out of the water as I gained a view of the shoreline. It pushed its way into the water and proceeded to bathe and flap its wings for a time before snorkeling and beginning to feed. It looked perfectly healthy. Hopefully it will find its way north.
The shoreline had 4 Semipalmated Sandpiper and 6 Spotted Sandpiper. Small numbers of Barn Swallows were moving through, including two Bank Swallow. 12 Black-necked Stilt were present at Eco Pond. At least 10 White-crowned Pigeons were heard/seen in the Flamingo area. Passerine migrant numbers were low. The highlights were Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Gray Kingbird and 5 male Shiny Cowbird (2 Ad, 3 Imm).
Mahogany hammock had Eastern Kingbird, Scarlet Tanager, Veery, Gray-cheeked Thrush, Indigo Bunting, and on the warbler front Blackpoll, Black-and-white, Palm and C.Yellowthroat.
Best,
Mark
