: Actually, all of the trails are currently open at the FPNWR according to Ben Nottingham of the US Fish & Wildlife service. . . .
:
: : These trails are actually in the southeastern corner of the refuge off of SR 29. The southern one - the short loop trail through the hammock - is open. The northern trail was flooded, choked with downed trees, a dead-end, and closed earlier in the winter - I had to bushwack it nevertheless looking for pineland to put survey sites in. I would call the refuge to ask about the status of these trails before heading out. If they do open that northern trail and extend it as they have sketched out in those plans, it may take folks close to the pines where the Hairys are, but it doesn't yet. I think the "Tower Compound" refers to the existing cell phone tower - that section of road is behind a locked gate.

: : : Birders may be interested in the new hiking/nature trail in the southwest corner of the Florida Panther NWR. There is an information kiosk at the beginning of the trail and future plans call for things like a "tower compound", etc. The trail goes thru several different types of habitat like sawgrass prairie, pine flatwoods, ponds. marshes, etc. It is accessible to the public right now. It is right off of the entrance to I-75 at SR29. For further info, go to:
