About 15 birders joined me at Matheson Hammock this morning. Parking was limited as many parking spaces were reserved for a wedding later today. Those of us who got there early heard a Myrtle Warbler calling. We also found our first Cape May of the day before most of the group arrived. There would be more Cape May's, but only one Myrtle. Several fig trees were in fruit, and the warblers had noticed. We started near the entrance with a couple of Blackpolls, 3 Black-throated Blues, and 3 Parulas. As we progressed through the picnic area, with occasional Chimney Swifts overhead, we found more of the same warblers, plus another Cape May or two, a heard-only Common Yellowthroat (one was spotted later on the nature trail), a Black-throated Green, and a (northern) Yellow Warbler!

Near Fairchild, we added Northern Flicker, Yellow-chevroned Parakeet, and Blue-and-yellow Macaw. We then headed up the service road. There we found another fruiting ficus, and more of the warblers. A little farther up we found a pair of American Redstarts. One of the Royal Palms had a nest hole with an Eastern Screech-Owl peering out. This one was mostly gray, with some brown accepts.

We looked for woodpeckers near the house, but without success. We continued along the side of the woods, and found a second Eastern Screech-Owl, a rufous morph. Eventually, we got close to the road and cut over through the taller grass to the old road (now trail). Before we got to the junction with the north-south road, we found our 3rd Eastern Screech-Owl, a brown morph. Shortly afterwards, a couple of Red-masked Parakeets flew by.

We then headed back toward Cutler on the nature trail. We found a female Common Yellowthroat, Worm-eating Warbler, making 10 warbler species for the day. We also found more of the same warblers in a couple of flocks along the trail. We returned to our cars shortly before 11.
