This morning about 23 or so Caloosa Bird Club members turned out at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Collier County to see what was happening with the birds. We saw somewhere between 50-55 species total. I'm not sure of the exact number. Not everyone saw all of the birds since we divided up into two groups. I saw a few birds en route from my home that no one else saw i.e. the previously mentioned Least Tern as well as one Sandhill Crane, Glossy Ibis, and a few others. Anyway, all I can say is that spring is definitely "happening" at Corkscrew Sanctuary! There were active nests of Yellow-crowned Night-Heron and Red-shouldered Hawk -- several young birds on the nests. But the most precious sight was a fluffy little ball of feathers perched out on the snag of one of the hard-hit Bald Cypress trees (thanks to Hurricane Wilma). Of course I am referring to a baby Barred Owl. Great photo ops for this bird and a real show stopper. There were many calling Great Crested Flycatchers and singing Northern Parulas, Carolina Wrens, Northern Cardinals, White-eyed Vireos, and others. Here's our morning list:
